THE 2026 FIFA WORLD CUP HAS ARRIVED — AND IT'S ALREADY FULL OF STORIES

By Jamilu Tukur Observer

The Biggest World Cup in History

The 2026 FIFA World Cup officially kicked off today, June 11, and history was made before a single ball was kicked. This is the 23rd FIFA World Cup, running from June 11 to July 19, jointly hosted across 16 cities — eleven in the United States, three in Mexico, and two in Canada. [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_FIFA_World_Cup) For the first time ever, 48 nations are competing, making this the largest World Cup in the history of the sport.

The Opening Ceremony — Africa on the World Stage

Before the first match, Mexico City hosted a spectacular opening ceremony. Shakira and Burna Boy performed "Dai Dai," the official song of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with other artists including Alejandro Fernández, Belinda, Danny Ocean, J Balvin, Lila Downs, Los Ángeles Azules, Maná, and South African singer Tyla also taking the stage. Nigeria's Burna Boy performing on the biggest stage in football is a moment every African should be proud of. Africa didn't just send teams — Africa provided the soundtrack.

Mexico vs South Africa — A Story 16 Years in the Making

The opening match was no ordinary game. This is the first time in history that a World Cup opening fixture has been repeated — the exact same two teams opening the tournament, 16 years apart. Exactly 16 years ago on this date, South Africa hosted Mexico in the 2010 World Cup opener, ending 1-1 thanks to Siphiwe Tshabalala's iconic strike and a Rafael Márquez equaliser. South Africa returned to the World Cup for the first time in 16 years, ranked 60th in the world, looking to reach the knockout stage for the first time. [Philadelphia Union](https://www.philadelphiaunion.com/news/2026-fifa-world-cup-kicks-off-thursday-with-mexico-vs-south-africa) Mexico, as co-hosts, carried the pressure of a nation on their backs at the iconic Estadio Azteca.

The poetic symmetry of this fixture alone made it one of the greatest storylines going into the tournament.

The Scandal Before the Whistle — Omar Artan

But not everything about this World Cup opening was beautiful. Days before kickoff, the tournament was already caught in controversy.

Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan — named CAF Referee of the Year in 2025 and the first Somali ever to referee a continental final — arrived at Miami International Airport on June 6 and was denied entry due to "vetting concerns." Somalia is on President Trump's travel ban list. No further details were given about why Artan specifically was turned away. [Al Jazeera](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/6/8/us-confirms-denying-entry-to-somali-referee-set-to-take-part-in-world-cup)

FIFA confirmed he would be unable to participate in the World Cup but said they are not involved in host country immigration processes and would not challenge the decision. [CBS News](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/world-cup-referee-somalia-omar-artan-barred-entry-us/)

A man who earned his place on merit — denied his dream by politics. Back home in Somalia, Artan was received as a hero. [NPR](https://www.npr.org/2026/06/10/nx-s1-5853075/somali-world-cup-referee-denied-u-s-entry-hailed-as-hero-at-home) Because that is exactly what he is.

England Arrive in Form

On the pitch, England wrapped up their World Cup preparations with a commanding 3-0 victory over Costa Rica. Declan Rice opened the scoring, Anthony Gordon added a penalty, and Ollie Watkins completed the win late on [The Sunday Guardian](https://sundayguardianlive.com/sports/england-vs-costa-rica-highlights-did-england-win-their-final-fifa-world-cup-2026-warm-up-result-goalscorers-and-key-moments-204887/) — sending Thomas Tuchel's side into the tournament full of confidence.

England face Croatia, Ghana, and Panama in their group. The Three Lions will feel this is their best chance in years.

What To Watch Next

The tournament is only hours old and already we have history, controversy, music, politics, and football all colliding at once. Over the next six weeks, 48 nations will battle for the greatest prize in sport. Africa has 10 teams. Argentina will defend their title. Messi will chase more records. And the world will be watching.

This World Cup has barely started — and it already feels like something special.
