How to Treat Chicken Cold & Respiratory Disease

If your chickens are sneezing, coughing, or struggling to breathe — read this immediately.

Cold weather and harmattan season in Nigeria is one of the biggest triggers for respiratory disease in local chickens. But knowing what to do early can save your entire flock.

Warning Signs to Watch For:

- Sneezing and coughing
- Watery or foamy eyes
- Discharge from nose and beak
- Swollen face or sinuses
- Difficulty breathing or wheezing
- Fluffed up feathers and weakness
- Pale comb and reduced appetite

If you see any of these signs act immediately. Do not wait.

NATURAL AND LOCAL REMEDIES:

1. Garlic Water

Crush fresh garlic into their drinking water daily. Garlic has strong natural antibiotic properties and has real evidence supporting its use for respiratory health in poultry. [BioMed Central](parasitesand)

2. Turmeric

Add one tablespoon of turmeric per kg of feed daily. Turmeric supports the immune system and helps birds recover faster from respiratory infections. [Wiley Online Library](Wiley)

3. Ginger

Add ginger powder to their feed. Ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory that helps open airways and reduce congestion.

4. Oregano
Oregano is a powerhouse immunity boosting herb that works as an anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral. [Poultryfarmguide](poultryfarmguide) Add oregano powder to their feed or soak it in their drinking water.

5. Eucalyptus or Peppermint Leaves

Peppermint helps thin mucus and clear airways making it easier for poultry to breathe during respiratory infections. [PubMed Central](pmc) Boil the leaves, let it cool, and offer as drinking water.

6. Apple Cider Vinegar

Add 1 to 2 tablespoons in 4 litres of drinking water. It supports the immune system and keeps the gut healthy during illness.

7. Thyme

Thyme is a natural antiparasitic and antibacterial herb that aids the respiratory system and relieves infection. [Poultryfarmguide](poultryfarmingguide) Add fresh or dried thyme to their feed several times a week.

💊 CONVENTIONAL TREATMENT:

If natural remedies are not improving your birds within 3 to 5 days use conventional medicine.

Traditional treatment commonly involves antibiotics such as tylosin or tetracyclines to reduce bacterial load and control infection. [PubMed Central](Punmed)

Ask your local vet or agro store for:

-Tylosin— for Mycoplasma and chronic respiratory disease
- Oxytetracycline— broad spectrum antibiotic for bacterial respiratory infections
- Multivitamins— to support recovery and boost immunity alongside antibiotics

Always follow dosage instructions carefully.

PREVENTION IS EVERYTHING:

Maintaining a clean and dry coop is essential for preventing respiratory illnesses from spreading. (ATTRA)

✅ Keep their housing dry and well ventilated especially during harmattan
✅ Avoid overcrowding — give birds enough space to breathe
✅ Isolate any sick bird immediately from the rest of the flock
✅ Change drinking water every single day
✅ Add garlic and ginger to feed regularly as prevention
✅ Quarantine any new birds for at least two weeks before introducing them

Important Warning:

If your birds are dying rapidly or not responding to any treatment within 5 days please contact a veterinarian immediately. Some respiratory diseases like Newcastle Disease and Infectious Bronchitis are very serious and require professional diagnosis and treatment.
